By the end of this course, you should have active speaking vocabulary of approximately 2,500-3,500 words for productive use in speech on various topics including:

  • Hypothetical and Opinion-Based Topics
  • Descriptive and Narrative Topics
  • Common phrasal verbs used naturally in speech
  • Natural word combinations and fixed expressions
  • Basic idioms and common expressions
  • Synonyms and Paraphrasing
  • Greeting, introducing, making small talk, expressing sympathy for social functions
  • Making requests, complaints, appointments, reservations
  • Giving opinions, agreeing/disagreeing, justifying viewpoints
  • Discussing solutions, making suggestions, negotiating
  • Telling stories, describing past experiences with appropriate sequencing
  • Giving instructions, explaining processes, describing how things work

 

And use appropriate grammar structures

  • Tense Usage: All basic tenses (present, past, future) in connected speech
  • Complex Structures: Present perfect, past perfect, conditionals (1st and 2nd), passive voice in conversation
  • Question Formation: Natural formation of various question types including indirect questions
  • Modal Verbs: Confident use of modals for speculation, advice, obligation, and possibility
  • Reported Speech: Basic reporting of what others have said
  • Relative Clauses: Using defining and non-defining relative clauses to add information
